Hidden Brain, Shankar Vedantam, and Learning

A recent edition of the podcast Hidden Brain has a fantastic look at learning. I highly recommend it.

Although the idea of the clicker method is not applicable to liberal arts or knowledge-based courses, what he brings out about the emotional sides of learning and the teacher/student relationship is very insightful.

Morning News, July 14: The Day After

 Many of us are glued to, or at least checking frequently, media accounts of the shooting last night.  Donald Trump is very fortunate, and I hope he sees the spiritual reality of this incident--his life was spared--and lives in gratitude.  He is not "lucky," he was saved from death or significant brain injury. It's hard not to predict this propels him to the White House, but just as no one expected the back lash toward Biden about his debate performance or this shooting, we cannot assume the future.  And of course, the incident will be investigated for a long time to come; the fact a sniper was even there is pretty disturbing. On the "Twitters" there were some funny memes about how the media's coverage. One large outlet I was checking last night, even with the very clear Fox News footage of gunshots and blood, wrote as a headline, "Secret Service interrupts Trump Rally." Reminder we all need

While I understand what he means, I cringe at that word. Shame to me always implies moral failure that makes one, or makes one feel, less than human or equal or worthy or enough.  Spiritually, we are not enough. Grace is needed--by everyone--and therefore shame doesn't belong, but guilt does. Shame is something we are taught and inflicted with.  Guilt, now that's a different matter. Different look at Millennials

The article below is from Chuck Colson's organization, Breakpoint Ministry.  It is a totally different look at Millennials. I have sat through, and read, countless presentations on the Millennial generation, the good and bad.  Usually these presentations revolve around Millennials' use of (dependence on) technologies, their different views of knowledge and knowledge acquisition (learning), their different work ethic (not bad, just differently motivated), and other issues related to college classroom pedagogy.  It is important information, and I would encourage anyone unfamiliar with it to get cracking.   I have a Millennial at home, and some of what I hear is true of him, some of it is not, because he was raised by two old farts who didn't want him to be a product of his generation.  We didn't have cable till he was 17, and he was expected to work and pay his own bills, etc.  But what is below is true of him and his work situation, and it is causing h...
